PUGET SOUND POLLUTION DECLINES, SOME SPECIES INCREASE, BUT MOST FISH STOCKS DECLINE

Washington State's, Puget Sound Water Quality Acton Committee's 1998 report to the legislature, advises that Puget Sound is cleaner with fewer pollutants, and that there is much improved shellfish conditions. Some species, notably harbor seals and most duck species are doing very well or well. Fish are not. Rockfish are severely depressed, herring are depressed, and many bird species are in trouble. Invasion of non-native exotics, including Spartina grass, European green crab, and zebra mussels are a concern.
